Chapter 6

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Xander wanted Maya out of the city that night.

She refused.

“You’re not staying here.”

“Yes, I am.”

“Maya.”

“No.”

He stood in her apartment while she packed school materials into her backpack.

“This isn’t a debate.”

She turned.

“Then stop talking like you’re my father.”

Xander’s jaw tightened.

“Caroline threatened you.”

“She warned you.”

“That is not better.”

“I have finals next week.”

“You think I care about finals right now?”

Maya’s eyes flashed.

“I do.”

He stopped.

She lowered her voice.

“That’s the problem, Xander. When you get scared, you assume your priorities become everyone’s priorities.”

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“Then ask what I need.”

He stared at her.

“What do you need?”

“For you not to control my life.”

Silence.

Xander slowly nodded.

“Fine.”

“Fine?”

“I hate it, but fine.”

She almost smiled.

“That’s progress.”

He sighed.

“What else?”

“A lawyer.”

“You have one.”

“I want my own.”

He blinked.

“For what?”

“In case this investigation turns ugly. I’m involved now.”

“I’ll pay.”

“No.”

“Maya.”

“I knew you’d say that.”

She pointed.

“I’ll use part of the money you already paid me.”

His expression softened.

“You really are impossible.”

“You hired me.”

They contacted authorities through attorneys the next morning.

The financial evidence was substantial enough to trigger an investigation into Mercer’s historic transactions.

No one promised answers about Xander’s father.

But financial crimes could still be examined.

Richard Mercer responded aggressively.

His company released statements accusing Vance Technologies of sabotaging a potential merger.

Anonymous stories appeared online questioning Maya.

Broke student targets billionaire.

Secret girlfriend received payment.

Photos surfaced of Maya in her catering uniform.

The contract leaked.

Maya saw the headline while standing behind the counter at the coffee shop.

BILLIONAIRE PAID COLLEGE STUDENT $20,000 TO PLAY GIRLFRIEND.

Customers stared.

One woman whispered.

Maya’s manager approached.

“You should probably go home.”

Maya took off her apron.

Outside, reporters waited.

“Maya!”

“Were you paid for a romantic relationship?”

“Did you blackmail Xander Vance?”

“Are you still together?”

She pushed through without answering.

Then Caroline appeared across the sidewalk.

Perfect coat.

Perfect hair.

Maya stopped.

Reporters surged forward.

Caroline looked directly at her.

“You should have taken my offer.”

Maya’s face went cold.

“You leaked the contract.”

Caroline smiled.

“You signed it.”

“You threatened me.”

“I warned you.”

Cameras recorded everything.

Caroline stepped closer.

“Go back to school, Maya.”

Maya’s hands trembled.

Not with fear.

Anger.

“You know what’s funny?”

Caroline’s smile faded.

“You’ve spent your entire life thinking money makes you powerful.”

Maya pointed toward the reporters.

“But you’re standing here terrified of a student who was counting coins three weeks ago.”

The crowd went silent.

Caroline’s face changed.

Maya continued.

“I’m not ashamed that I needed money.”

Cameras flashed.

“I’m not ashamed that I worked three jobs.”

Another flash.

“I’m not ashamed that I accepted a ridiculous job because I was about to lose my home and education.”

Caroline whispered, “You should stop talking.”

“No.”

Maya’s voice strengthened.

“The people who should be ashamed are the ones who believe hardship makes someone less valuable.”

Behind the reporters, a black car stopped.

Xander got out.

He had heard enough.

He walked toward Maya.

Caroline looked at him.

“Xander—”

He passed her.

Straight to Maya.

“You okay?”

Maya nodded.

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

“No.”

“That sounds more accurate.”

A tiny laugh escaped her.

Xander turned toward the cameras.

“The contract is real.”

Reporters erupted.

He lifted a hand.

“I hired Maya Bennett to pretend to be my girlfriend for one weekend because I was too cowardly to have an honest conversation with my family.”

Maya looked at him.

He continued.

“She fulfilled the agreement.”

Caroline stared.

“Everything after that was real.”

The sidewalk became chaos.

“Are you saying you’re dating?”

“Do you love her?”

“Did she receive additional money?”

Xander looked at Maya.

She raised an eyebrow.

“Don’t get dramatic.”

He smiled.

Then told the reporters, “I’m working on it.”

The clip spread everywhere.

But more importantly, so did Maya’s speech.

Students reposted it.

Working parents reposted it.

People talked less about the fake girlfriend scandal and more about how easily poverty was treated as humiliation.

Three days later, the university dean called Maya into her office.

Maya expected another problem.

Instead, the dean turned a laptop around.

An architecture nonprofit had seen the news.

They offered Maya a merit scholarship.

Not because she was Xander’s girlfriend.

Because a professor had submitted Maya’s portfolio months earlier.

The committee had finally reviewed it.

Maya stared at the letter.

Full tuition through graduation.

Her eyes filled.

“I got it?”

“You earned it.”

Maya cried.

Completely.

No wiping tears away.

No pretending she was strong enough not to need them.

She called Xander.

“I got the scholarship.”

His voice changed instantly.

“You did?”

“I did.”

“I knew you would.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“I strongly suspected.”

She laughed through tears.

That evening, Xander arrived with cheap takeout instead of flowers.

“Why takeout?”

“You told me flowers die and food is useful.”

“You remembered.”

“I occasionally listen.”

They ate on Maya’s floor because the little table was covered in blueprints.

Xander looked at one.

“What is this?”

“My final project.”

The model showed a mixed-income residential community.

Open courtyards.

Childcare spaces.

Public gardens.

Flexible apartments.

“Who taught you this?”

“My life.”

She pointed to one section.

“People with less money usually get treated like good design is a luxury. It shouldn’t be.”

Xander studied the plans.

“You could build this.”

“One day.”

“I know investors.”

Maya looked at him.

“No.”

He sighed.

“I was going to say I could introduce you after graduation.”

“Oh.”

“Not give it to you.”

“Good.”

“You’ve trained me.”

“Barely.”

He smiled.

Then his phone rang.

Elena.

Xander answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Maya watched him stand.

“When?”

Silence.

“Is he in custody?”

Maya’s heart began pounding.

Xander hung up.

“What happened?”

He looked at her.

“Richard Mercer was arrested.”

Maya stood.

“For the financial crimes?”

“Yes.”

“And your father?”

Xander swallowed.

“They found something else.”

“What?”

“A former employee gave investigators records Richard thought were destroyed.”

Maya waited.

Xander’s eyes filled.

“Evidence suggests my father’s crash wasn’t random.”

She covered her mouth.

“Xander…”

“They don’t know everything yet.”

He looked broken.

Relieved.

Terrified.

Angry.

All at once.

Maya crossed the room and wrapped her arms around him.

This time there was no contract.

No audience.

No reason to pretend.

He held her tightly.

For fourteen years, Xander had lived without answers.

Now the truth was finally beginning to come home.
